Keyword Research: The Building Block of a Good Site

If you hope to have a good presence on the internet you need to realize how important keyword research is. There are billions of different web pages online and your site is going to be competing with all of them, most importantly the ones that have the same subject.

You’ll have a much greater chance of getting visitors if you’re using keywords or specific phrases that infoseekers are already typing into the search engines. If they type in a phrase or keyword that is anywhere on your website your website should have higher search engine rankings because your site will have the content they are probably looking for.

The Tools For Keyword Research

There are a number of different tools available to help you with keyword research but the most commonly used weapon is Google’s Keyword External Tool. You can type in any word and it will give you a list of results related to that term and how people are searching for those terms.

If your keyword is too broad, it’s going to be harder to get web surfers to find your site because you’re going to have a lot more competition. Let’s take the word cars for example. There are billions of web pages that contain the word “cars” somewhere on a page so it would be very difficult for readers to find your site through a search engine search. However, if your main keyword phrase was a bit longer and more specific like “2010 Camaros” you will notice that there are far less competing pages on the internet. This will make it easier for you to have really great rankings in the search engine results pages.

The easiest way to analyze your competition before choosing a final keyword phrase to target as your main keyword all you have to do is visit Google. You can also use any other search engine that you prefer but web surfers use Google more than any other search engine by far.

Once you arrive to your preferred search engine, you’ll want to enter the keyword you’re testing into the query box but you need to make sure that’s inside quotation marks. Inputting your phrase this way will show your true competition because it’s going to give you the results of every page that have that exact phrase. Using cars as an example again let’s say you just input blue Camaro into the box and hit search. This is going to give you a list of results that have pages that contain both the words blue and Camaro but they won’t necessarily have them together. If you put “blue Camaro” into the search query box you’re going to get a list of results that have those words somewhere on the page side by side. Those websites are going to be your true competition.

If you hope to make any money at all with websites, you need to know how important keyword research is. If people are unable to locate your site because it’s getting lost among millions of other pages you aren’t going to make any money. The more eyes you have on your site the higher your chances are of making money.
